Have an IRS Letter

Receiving a letter from the IRS can be a scary and intimidating process. Remember, not all IRS letters are negative, some are simply providing companies and taxpayers with relevant tax information. Often times the letters are an attempt to get additional tax return information or an effort to collect a perceived tax due.

Remember the following five rules when answering a letter from the IRS.

  1. All letters have due dates. Failure to meet these due dates will cause you to lose appeal opportunities or the ability to go to Tax Court if needed.

  2. Everything you send the IRS will be saved. Your information must be accurate, true, and defendable.

  3. Organize your information prior to sending it to the IRS. The IRS will not go through your records in an effort to solve your tax issue. If they cannot easily tell what you are trying to convey or if you do not site the correct IRS codes as a defense to your position, you will lose your issue.

  4. Information you send to the IRS will be used against you if it supports the IRS collection position. What you don’t send to the IRS is just as important as what you do send.

  5. Always keep a copy of the IRS letter and any information you send as a response.
